Republican Ubermensch
It’s pretty interesting to note that absolutely none of the revelations cited in Bannon’s new tell-all is surprising. Any sentient person suspected everything that was revealed. But what I find much more interesting is that there is absolutely no coverage of the equally obvious suspicion that the GOP was complicit in the questionable election of Donald Trump, and that it has played an enormous role in finding the toadies who would sign the Faustian bargain Trump requires of all his associates. We have Rex Tillerson and his sole qualifying offering to the Trump Club for Men: his Exxon oil deal with Russia, and Wilbur Ross and his extensive knowledge of the ins and outs of international money laundering through Bank of Cyprus. And who can forget Steve Mnuchin’s “greed is good” impersonation of Gordon Gekko?
But what about the GOP itself? We’ve seen Orrin Hatch finally rip off his shirt to reveal the Ubermensch costume he wears underneath his clothes as he righteously joins the Club. We have Jefferson Beauregard Sessions III, and his magnolia-scented impression of 20th Century white supremacy. We have Devin Nunes getting the go-ahead from the virtuous Paul Ryan to make his midnight run to Club headquarters in order to subvert the investigation into the Trump/Putin collaboration. And let’s not forget Mitch McConnell’s equanimous, “Let the people of Alabama decide”, as he feverishly worked to pass legislation that would pay off his party’s real tax bill.
What I’d like to know is the extent to which the Republicans assisted Russia in the election of Donald Trump. Why did the GOP agree to soften its policy on sanctions against Russia before Trump was even elected? There’s an endless list of Trump collaborators in the GOP, and they prove each day that it really does take more than one quisling to elect a strongman.
